Last night Shane and I were watching an episode of criminal minds and I got a text from my friend Alonni saying the northern lights were out and would I like to go to the river with them to see them? Of course I did! Now these northern lights were nothing like the lights the other night. Let me count the differences. These were dull, slow and hard to see. The other night they were fast, sharp, all over the sky and had visible bands of pink in them. Don’t be deceived, the camera can capture much much more light in 30 seconds than we can with our eyes. We saw very little of the purple ourselves, the camera saw a lot more. The problem with 30 second exposures is that the earth moves within those seconds and the stars are actually blurry. Now, I did enhance these pictures a tiny bit, to cut out on a little of the noise, but I tried to do as little as possible. I wish I could have filmed the lights the other night, but they were over so fast that by the time Ryan got to the river they were gone. I’m so thankful it was above freezing for my inaugural trip! I don’t think there will be too many more of those!
